Care briefing

# Bring questions that need real answers.

Start with what brought you to care, rather than a treatment name alone. Write down the answers you need so the conversation can stay focused.

FDA is short for Food and Drug Administration, the US agency that reviews medicines.

## Prepare the goal and the unknowns

Before the visit

#### Your goal

Describe the problem in your own words. Note what you hope would be different in daily life.

#### Your health information

Gather your current medicines, supplements and the health details you want the clinician to consider.

During the visit

#### Your goal

Ask whether the proposed care addresses that goal and what other ways to approach it were considered.

#### Your health information

Ask what else the clinician needs to know before a decision can be made.

A useful question links the plan to your own goal. There is room to ask for a shorter explanation.

## Questions about the decision

### What is the medicine, and how would I take it?

Get the ingredient and brand names in writing. Ask whether it is a tablet, injection or another way of taking medicine.

### Has the FDA reviewed this exact product?

Ask the clinician to show the FDA’s approval and approved label for the exact medicine, and explain what it is approved to treat.

### If it is mixed for me, what need does that solve?

Ask what is changed and why a ready-made option would not meet the need.

### What are the reasons to choose another option?

Ask what would make the clinician change direction, including choosing no medicine.

### What changes if I am pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy?

Make this part of the conversation before a treatment decision.

## Questions about the care around it

### Who prescribes, and which pharmacy supplies it?

Get each person’s or pharmacy’s full name and licence number. Ask them to show you their state licence-search page.

### What is the full ongoing cost?

Ask for the medicine, visits, tests and other charges to be listed separately.

### Who answers after the visit?

Ask how to send a question, who reviews it and how the next check-in is decided.

## Room for your own follow-up question

As of September 2026, the doctor-licensing boards’ group says proper care requires more than picking a medicine from a menu.

The same advice says patients need a chance to ask the clinician questions, as of September 2026.

If an answer is hard to follow, ask for the meaning in everyday words. A written summary can help you compare what was proposed.

Sources for this briefing

Choose the source for your question. For a doctor’s licence, use the state licence search. For a medicine’s approval, ask to see the FDA approval and approved label for that exact product.
