Care briefing

# Will insurance pay for this use?

Tell the insurer the exact medicine name, its form—tablet or injection—and the condition it would treat. Ask whether your plan pays for that medicine and use.

The hormone GLP-1 acts as a chemical messenger within the body, helping to regulate hunger and blood sugar. Drugs that mimic this action are often known as GLP-1 medicines.

## Ordinary Medicare benefit or temporary programme

Weight-only use

#### Medicare Part D

Medicare’s prescription-drug benefit is Part D. As of September 2026, it continues to exclude medicines used for weight loss.

#### Temporary access programme

As of September 2026, eligible patients can get certain weight medicines through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge for $50 a month.

A different medical use

#### Medicare Part D

As of September 2026, Part D may cover a medicine used for an accepted purpose besides weight loss.

#### Temporary access programme

People who have type 2 diabetes cannot use the Bridge as of September 2026; their prescriptions follow ordinary Part D rules.

A medicine being eligible for coverage is not a promise that a particular plan will pay.

## Understand the temporary programme’s limits

As of September 2026, the Bridge’s opening date is July 1, 2026, and its closing date is December 31, 2027.

As of September 2026, adults aged 18 or older can qualify for the Bridge, including those aged 80. Weight, health conditions and Medicare plan requirements must also be met.

For the Bridge, BMI is worked out from your height and weight when GLP-1 treatment begins.

Ask your clinician which of these three groups fits you:

As of September 2026, you need a BMI of at least 35; or at least 30 with certain heart, blood-pressure or kidney problems; or at least 27 with certain other conditions.

For the BMI 30 group, the conditions are heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or chronic kidney disease at stage 3a or worse.

Ask your clinician whether your heart-failure diagnosis is that type, or whether your kidney disease is at that stage.

For this blood-pressure condition, the top reading must exceed 140 or the bottom reading must exceed 90 despite taking two blood-pressure medicines.

For the BMI 27 group, the qualifying conditions are pre-diabetes, a past heart attack, a past stroke, or artery disease with symptoms affecting the arms or legs.

Ask your clinician to confirm the exact diagnosis and limits in the programme’s eligibility page below. A broad description such as “heart trouble” is not enough.

As of September 2026, the Bridge excludes people with type 2 diabetes or with obstructive sleep apnea that is moderate or severe. So does MASH with moderate or advanced liver scarring and no cirrhosis diagnosis. These uses go through ordinary Part D coverage rules.

MASH is a type of fatty-liver illness. Ask your clinician whether your diagnosis matches the programme’s liver exclusion. Not every fatty-liver diagnosis is excluded.

For the sleep-apnea exclusion, ask your clinician whether your breathing problem during sleep is the moderate or severe kind.

As of September 2026, drug coverage must come through either a standalone Medicare Part D plan or a coordinated care plan under Medicare Advantage.

Medicare private fee-for-service, cost-contract and PACE plans do not qualify unless you also have a standalone Part D plan, as of September 2026.

Use the plan name on your insurance card when you call. Ask whether it is a qualifying plan type. The programme’s eligibility page below lists the included and excluded plans.

The Bridge, as of September 2026, also calls for a prescription and advance approval, plus ongoing changes to eating and physical activity.

As of September 2026, you cannot use the Bridge for 2026 if Part D has paid any amount for your GLP-1 medicine that year.

The $50 you pay for the Bridge is not credited toward Part D’s yearly out-of-pocket cap, as of September 2026.

## Ask about the plan’s own rules

As of September 2026, possible coverage still depends on a plan’s formulary and prior authorization.

A plan calls its list of covered medicines a formulary. Prior authorization means the plan’s agreement is needed in advance.

Ask what documents are needed, what your own payment would be and what happens if the request is declined.

## Before using a savings card

### Does this card apply to my coverage?

As of September 2026, savings cards for semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) exclude government coverage, including Medicare, Medicaid and military plans. As of September 2026, these cards require workplace or private health insurance.

### Is a cash offer a different option?

As of September 2026, people on Medicare can use some makers’ self-pay offers even though they cannot use the savings cards. Check the terms of the exact cash offer.
